Dear Parents and Guardians,
All
Victorians have been affected by the devastating bushfires.
From
those in bushfire devastated communities who have lost loved family
members, friends and neighbours; to the
thousands who have lost their homes and to those who have watched the
tragic events unfold in the media - the scope of this disaster is
unprecedented in its impact on the Victorian community.
Schools
and kindergartens are an important central connection of the
communities affected, and sadly they have not been immune from the
widespread destruction of property that has occurred in Victoria. We
have lost many buildings including three schools and kindergartens,
and many other services that support children and families.
The
extraordinary events of the past week pose enormous challenges for
parents and for people working with children in our schools and
kindergartens as they support those directly and indirectly affected
by grief and trauma.
Staff
at schools and kindergartens will play an integral role in the
healing process for many Victorian families.
I
know many school staff and early childhood educators are doing an
outstanding job in addressing this tragedy.
Many
will have already spoken to your children about the bushfires and
what they mean for those affected. Many are also involved in
supporting the relief effort and encouraging their students and local
families to get involved.
To
assist schools and kindergartens in this enormous task, the
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has produced
a range of advice and resources to help staff tackle the many
challenges posed by the bushfires.
Information
has also been prepared to help parents in discussing the recent
bushfires with your children.
I
hope this information provides you with some guidance and assistance
during this difficult time. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all
families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.

Acting Minister
for Education
